TO KNOW, LOVE, AND SERVE GOD.

A mystery for our readers: Do you know anything about this Cross?

My aunt had her 90th birthday party and gave me some things. Among them, she gave me this cross.

The Passion Cross

Anybody know what this is called and when these were made? We’ll give a hint:  this one carries an indulgence from a Pope Pius. Tell us in the comments what this is!

  • Would that be a Pardon Crucifix, of which Pius X attached an indulgence in the year 1905?

  • it’s a La Sallette cross, the ends of the cross is a St Thomas clover cross.

    • Hmmm. That might be right to refer to the particular depiction, but that’s not the name we heard used for these as a class of devotional. This style had a name to refer to them as a genre of devotional. These used to be popular in every Catholic home.

  • Titus says:

These little shadow boxes were enormously popular items. Some of them had sick-call sets built in. Or, perhaps you’re referring to the crucifix itself, as opposed to the presentation (I’ve seen cast-bronze or stand-alone pot metal examples of the same theme, the crucifix with the various implements of the passion). I’m honestly not sure what, precisely, the popular name for them was.
