Deliver Us From Evil

“She [Russia] will scatter her errors through the world…

Déjà vu? Our Lady’s words to the children of Fatima on July 17, 1917, come to mind as the tanks rumble into Ukraine. In 1917, the Holy Mother never said if it was a one-time possibility that Russia would spread her errors, nor did she say exactly when, but the remedy was the consecration of Russia and Communions of reparation. And, of course, always pray the Rosary. We, in our enlightened age, have sadly turned away from these practices, to what end?

Why does it take a war to remind us to take to our knees in prayer? To dust off a divine intervention that never should have been relegated to the back shelf of our collective memory in the first place?

Evil has been visibly mounting around us for two years, first covid and its restrictions even in churches; then the wild destruction of law and order in the aftermath of a police officer kneeling on a black man’s body; the insane societal embrace of gender questioning, despite God Almighty’s creating them “male and female”; race wars; and overall chaos in education and business.

In short, serving God has been cancelled and what has that gained for us?

How appropriate it is to hear the Readings of this weekend’s Liturgy. We don’t often get to the Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, but a late Easter has brought us to the point of hearing some advice about our present times.

“The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had; so, too, does one’s speech disclose the bent of one’s mind. Praise no one before he speaks, for it is then that people are tested.”

Sirach

“A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.”

St. Luke

As always, the writing was on the wall for us to see, so to speak. And the Gospel of Luke on the First Sunday of Lent provides the reason:

The devil said to Him.

I shall give to you all this power and glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish. All this will be yours, if you worship me.”

We are currently engaged in a visible form of the age-old battle of Good vs. Evil. Many, many people, especially those in power, have bought into a power trip over us, embracing the darkness of spiritual death. This realization should spur our prayers. We don’t need the Pope or local Bishop or pastor to tell us to do this, to engage in this war for souls. It’s on us, you and me. We have the remedy in our hands, in our Mother Mary’s words and in her Holy Rosary. It is not too late to start and then stay the course. As she said,

“In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.” We’re here to help make it so.
