“Abortion is healthcare!” The voice was loud over the portable megaphone as he approached. “Abortion is legal!”
The guy with the megaphone came walking toward our group of eight pro-lifers gathered in front of a Planned Parenthood satellite in Little Canada. He stopped in the middle of the group, but moved out onto the very edge of the sidewalk and began waving his “Keep Abortion Legal” sign at oncoming traffic. So there, among our “Protect Life” and “Abortion is Legalized Murder” and “Choose Life” signs, was a scruffy bearded renegade in a black short-sleeved shirt, and sweatpants ready for a face-off.
It wasn’t long before it happened. The fellow had a limited vocabulary. After asking why we hated women, and asserting abortion is health care in his accented whiny voice, he descended into yelling obscenity after obscenity at us. Aiming the megaphone into the faces of the pro-lifers, he yelled, “F— you! F— babies!” And that was only the beginning as he made sexual comments about us and poked fun at our presence over his megaphone. Nor did he have kind words for a pro-lifer’s Divine Mercy sign.
Then, the young black woman arrived, clapping her hands and doing a dance step in a circle around him. Over and over she grinned at him and danced. In biblical times, she’d have been dancing before the Lord, but this was a dance to honor Satan.
Some of our group tried to reason with the fellow, an eighty-plus gentleman spoke with him at length to no avail. The guy got more and more foul, screaming “F—” at the traffic over his megaphone. Too bad public obscenity isn’t a crime anymore.
The fact he arrived exactly at noon indicates it was a pre-planned disruption; after all, Planned Parenthood has cameras and even though not open on Saturdays, they’d know we were there monthly.
I was not accosted, except being referred to as the old lady. More than once he stared at my sign – “It’s not Your Body, It’s Mine” with a clear picture of a near-term unborn child – and turned away, once saying “It’s a woman’s body” to the passing cars.
The guy’s performance and foul utterances matched the tenor of the day, the two guys in sports cars who gunned their engines at the sight of us, the thumbs down, and the woman screaming out her car window “F—” at the Divine Mercy sign.
At the conclusion of our time, we silently gathered and bad-mouth man hung around as we invoked St. Michael the Archangel. “F— prayers,” he said.
Veronica, who has Down Syndrome and a bigger vocabulary, was angry at him, but I told her and the rest of the group not to engage, it was what he wanted so he could be more disgusting.
As we left, he started in again. “See, them! They’ve parked illegally at McDonald’s” he shouted as he followed us. Except we kept going through the lot to the next street. I was near enough to hear him start mumbling some sort of gibberish with no intelligible words to himself.
And then he was out on the street and in front of us, yelling, “They’re following me! They pushed me! They’re after me!”
None of us was near him. All had disappeared toward their vehicles when I saw him in a clumsy run down the street. I think he was trying to make it look like he was being chased except he was alone. Once he got into his vehicle, he zoomed down the street, turned around, and came back armed with his camera to take pictures of our cars.
It was an encounter with evil, the descent into gross language, yelling about women’s bodies was designed to destroy our dignity and desecrate all we hold sacred. Truly, the gates of hell have opened in our state, and we were given a preview of the future. God help us all.
