One Response to The Empire Builder (or, What I Saw on the Train)

  1. Thank you, John, for another excellent piece. It reminded me of the opening of Flannery O’Connor’s short story “Revelation” that is set in a doctor’s office, a place like the train where the cross-section of humanity meets and we behold “the body of Christ” that St. Paul alludes to in his letters. Humanity in all its prodigious variety and in its unchangeable oneness appears to remind us of the human condition that surrounds us all as we seek to know, reach our destination, and discover meaning–a point you capture so well.

    All my best wishes
