DECEMBER 30 – ST. SABINUS, BISHOP, AND HIS COMPANIONS, MARTYRS.

THE cruel edicts of Diocletian and Maximin against the Christians, being published in the year 303, Sabinus, bishop of Assisium, and several of his clergy, were apprehended and kept in custody till Venustianus, the Governor of Etruria and Umbria, came thither. Upon his arrival in that city he caused the hands of Sabinus, who had made a glorious confession of his faith before him, to be cut off; and his two deacons, Marcellus and Exuperantius, to be scourged, beaten with clubs, and torn with iron nails, under which torments they both expired. Sabinus is said to have cured a blind boy, and a weakness in the eyes of Venustianus himself, who was thereupon converted, and afterward beheaded for the faith. Lucius, his successor, commanded Sabinus to be beaten to death with clubs at Spoleto. The martyr was buried a mile from that city; but his relics have been since translated to Faenza.

REFLECTION: How powerfully do the martyrs cry out to us by their example, exhorting us to despise a false and wicked world!

WORD OF THE DAY

CLOSED TIMES. Seasons of the ecclesiastical year during which there are restrictions concerning the celebration of marriage. Formerly a marriage at Mass was not allowed from the beginning of Advent until after the Epiphany, and during Lent and the octave of Easter. The present legislation does not forbid a Mass at the marriage during these times but does prohibit the distinctive Missa pro Sponsis (Mass for the Spouses) on the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, on the last three days of Holy Week, on solemn feasts, and during the octave of Easter. Moreover, “if matrimony is celebrated during Advent, or Lent, or other days that have a penitential character, the pastor should admonish the spouses to take into account the distinctive nature of these liturgical seasons” (Rituale Romanum, Ordo Celebrandi Matrimonium, Praenotanda).

DAILY ADVENT MEDITATIONS

Deepen your appreciation of the Incarnation and our salvation with The Great Truths Series by Fr. Richard Clarke S.J. Read today’s “The Angels’ Song & The Memories of Heaven” but consider this:

But peace not for all, only for men of good will.  Christ, indeed, brought peace to all, but all did not accept it, only those whose good will and loyal spirit of submission made them ready to acknowledge Him as their Lord, and whom, therefore, the good will of God had predestined to the eternal peace and joy of heaven.
