Life on the Line – Christmas Prelude
More beeps and thumbs up made the day brighter for our little group on December 17. And in honor of her birthday, Veronica wanted a new sign, with a targeted message: Every Child Deserves a Birthday. She escaped the knife to have a birthday, she is adamant that other unborn children should have that chance, too. Out of reverence for the season, my sign was adjusted as well.
Even though this Planned Parenthood outlet is closed on Saturdays, an employee showed up soon after we arrived. After a quick stop in the building, she got in her car and was soon headed down the back driveway in departure mode. But suddenly she was back and began racing around the parking lot, coming beside us to shout expletives.
Two other vehicles driving by on the street saddened me. A grandfather drove by as he was taking his grandson to McDonald’s next door for lunch. The old man leaned over and gave us thumbs down so many times and so fast his arm looked like a pile driver. His grandkid never saw him, though. The boy, about ten, was staring out the window at us and reading the signs, particularly the one with the brightly colored birthday cake. I hope the kid asks the old man some touchy questions.
The other vehicle of interest also contained a child, perhaps 13 or so, the age of one of my grandsons who has endured surgeries to fix his heart and kidneys. This kid, however, was very different, making faces out the window and shaking his middle finger at us. What does he know about abortion, I wondered. Did his mother put him up to the dancing middle finger, corrupting his mind with evil?
The day ended in typical fashion: a driver came close to the slushy curb, hurriedly speeding along…and splashed our group.
