If Lepanto Happened Today…

Today, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, commemorates the victory of the Catholic armadas against the Ottoman fleet. At the behest of Pope Pius V, Catholics were implored to pray the rosary for victory. Thanks to Our Lady, the armadas were aided by a miraculous change in wind. They won.

The victory was decisive on several fronts. First, it reinvigorated Catholics who had been demoralized by the Protestant revolt. Second, it demonstrated that the Ottomans could be roundly defeated. Third, it demonstrated again that the rosary is a more powerful weapon than military might.

Today, however, if there was an Ottoman Empire marching to conquer, would we see the same?

Would we instead be told not to pray for victory?

Would we be ridiculed as “rigid” and told that we don’t understand these invaders?

Would we be told to accompany them… not to convert them?

And Heaven forbid we took to the Rosary and didn’t act ecumenical…

Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!
