Life on the Line – Part 3
“Drop dead.”
That’s what the young man said in answer to our wish for a good day. Clad in a drab tee shirt and rumpled jeans and pushing a backpack on wheels, he’s passed through our pro-life line before, on his way to wherever.
“We all will die someday,” one of our group replied calmly.
“You first.”
Another day, another collection of curses and fingers as the eight of us stood before a Planned Parenthood outpost in a St. Paul suburb. The older woman next to me held high her Moms for Life sign. “My arms hurt so badly doing this,” she confided. “I pray to make it through the hour.”
“Just like Jesus on the cross,” came a reply from one of the group.
Jesus would sigh and shake His head, I think. The angry people gun their engines and race by, many hold up those middle fingers. People yell obscenities from their cars, didn’t that guy in the red truck go by and do that the last time? He has a limited vocabulary, it seems. Obviously we are viewing a shared mindset: how dare we defy the call for death to the unborn. It was sad to see a bearded dad lean over to hold his finger up – in front of his young children in the back seat. It makes a person want to ask how many other children would have shared that back seat, were it not for the procedure his finger supports. And what have his actions taught them as he wants to propagate death rather than life?
Then, the car that went up the curb. The young women inside wanted to make their point, so the one sitting on the passenger side leaned way out of the window waving her middle finger to be sure we all saw it as her friend drove right next to the curb. And then the car was on the curb, right before the middle few of us, Veronica included (she didn’t really notice). The bump was so pronounced that the finger woman could easily have fallen on the cement sidewalk. No one jumped back in fear, the driver hurriedly righted the vehicle, and they sped away. It wasn’t attempted assault, just poor driving. However, next time I’ll have the camera ready and let the police decide.
And at the end, a guy screamed out, “You suck!”
Ah, an idea for a new sign! “Abortion Sucks a Baby Out of A Mother.”
Should I or shouldn’t I get busy with my markers again?
